Deer Gear 2016
Friday, April 21st, 2017

We’re back again with a look at some of the latest products to help you in your pursuit of Ol’ Mossyhorns!  Check out some of the gear that we tested in 2016

Swhacker Broadheads:

2Blade100Gr_Alum_2inch_Swhacker_Web_large

We’ve used Swhacker Broadheads for a few years now and our results have been stellar. The 2 blade 100 grain head not only flies perfectly out of our setups, the 2 inch cut creates a wound channel that is deadly. These heads are super durable and can be used over and over with the replacement blades (link: https://www.swhacker.com/products/100grain-2inch-replace-6pack) The main reason we love the Swhacker Broadheads is because they provide some peace of mind when human error comes into play. Yes they fly great, but as the saying goes “It’s the indian, not the arrow!” It is an undeniable fact that we sometimes make a less than perfect shot even when conditions are optimal. These 2 inch cutting heads create the type of damage that allows us to recover the animal during these situations. When we do succeed in making the perfect shot however, the animal usually goes down within sight. Our experience with these heads has been very favorable and we stand behind the Swhacker product line 100%

ArborWear Double Thick Tech Mossy Oak Hoodie:

arborwear-400250-f_01

We’ve gushed over the ArborWear double thick pullover hoodies for years and assumed that this “Tech” came version would be just as good, if not better. We’re pleased to announce that ArborWear has indeed outdone themselves yet again and created a better version of this staple of our gear bag. The “Tech” performance fabric allows moisture to escape the garment while providing some water repellancy by virtue of the Teflon Fabric Protector. The overall hoodie is lighter than it’s cotton predecessor while the larger Snap Neck hood opening provides freedom of movement in a tree stand situation. Most times, I wore this hoodie as the outermost layer and it was perfect for both bowhunting and gun seasons. Ever since Arborwear came out with the double thick hoodie, we always thought they should make a camouflage version. They delivered with the Tech Hoodie in Mossy Oak Break-Up Country and knocked it out of the park!
Mathews Halon:   Click on photo below for full view

HalonSpecs

In 2016, Mathews introduced 3 versions of its flagship bow called the Halon.
The Halon comes in three models determined by brace height:
Halon 5 This bow has a very short 5″ brace height and is the fastest, with a rated IBO of 353 fps.
Halon 6 This bow has a 6” brace height with a rated IBO of 345 fps.
Halon 7 Uses a 7” brace height and is the most forgiving. IBO is 335 fps.

Overview: We reviewed the 7 inch version with a draw weight of 70 pounds and draw length of 29 inches. The speed produced out of this bow is a consistent 320 fps which I am happy with. I shoot a one pin sight and this bow allows me to shoot out to 30 yards with zero windage adjustment.
The bow is heavier than most other bows on the market but I viewed that as an acceptable trade-off and considered it as adding to the vibration dampening and steady hold that I got when shooting. This bow is super quiet off the rack and is very noticeable when shooting it against other top shelf branded bows in the pro shop.
The fit and finish is probably the best on the market as Mathews is no stranger to producing beautiful looking bows.
How’s it shoot?: Mathews departed from the No Cam design of 2015 and went to a more aggressive Crosscentric design for the Halon. I was super impressed with how smooth the draw cycle is on the Halon. The back wall is of course rock solid with zero creep. In my humble opinion, it seems like the Halon is a blend between last year’s No Cam and their speedy Monster line. If you could take a speed bow and beef up the durability, while at the same time make it smooth and forgiving, you’d have the Halon. Simply put, the Halon is the best shooting bow I’ve ever owned and will be hard pressed to move to another bow anytime soon.
Upwind Scent Elimination:  Click on photo below for full view

Upwind-Cu.-O.-R.-E.
The Upwind product line has grown over the last few years into an all around scent elimination system that has become part of our seasonal regimine. Upwind products work on the CuO.R.E concealment formula using charged Copper as it’s backbone. This scientifically proven method of using charged copper to combat odors while making it non-toxic and odorless is the basis of why we use the product. Being a science teacher for over 21 years, I like to think that I can recognize “junk science” when I see it. After examining the science behind the Upwind products and trying them out on everything from skunk odors and gasoline to actual hunting experience in the deer woods, I am impressed with the evidence. Upwind not only works to eliminate a broad range of odors, they offer a full range of products at competitive prices. There is a reason why this company is growing!

Annual Deer Gear Review – 2015 edition

As deer seasons are coming to a close around the country, the Heritage Hunters crew is weighing in on the gear that we have been fortunate enough to test over the past 4 months. Our Deer Gear reviews are somewhat unique in that we tell you about these products after we’ve had a thorough opportunity to test them and not before! In other words, these reviews are more of a testimony on the gear rather than a pre-season commercial. Anything and everything that a hunter might use in pursuit of the elusive whitetail deer is fair game for us to peruse, fondle and essentially abuse in an effort to see how it holds up over the course of the season. This year’s lineup did not disappoint and includes some items that will certainly be in our gear bag next year.  Some of the products are new to the market, some are new takes on an old classic and others are simply products that we’ve just learned about. As usual, please click on the photos to visit the websites of these companies and check out the gear for yourself!

Arborwear Double-thick Hoodies: Mossy Oak Camouflage

DSC_0096

It seems like we feature the Arborwear Double-thick hoodies every year in the Deer Gear review but when Arborwear announced that they were making these classic hoodies in a camo pattern we got pretty excited! As the name suggests, the double-layer thickness of this one garment takes the place of two or three in our pack to save space. The two (12 ounce) layers of pre-washed cotton fleece kept us warm and the Break-up Country HD pattern from Mossy Oak kept us hidden. The double-thick hoodie is the most rugged sweatshirt you will ever own and the button feature of the hood allows for extra layering without the tightness around the neck that other hoodies can cause. Arborwear.com is running a sale on these hoodies right now so check them out and take advantage of a great piece of gear!

Volt Heat: Heated Fleece Vest: $170

DSC_0076 (1)

We have reviewed heated apparel before and would relate these types of items to using a cell phone. Once you get used to using it, it becomes a part of your routine and by extension, a necessity. If you find yourself without it, you’re naked and uneasy. So too is how we feel about these type of vests in cold weather. Once the temperature drops below 40 degrees, these vests provide the piece of mind and comfort to not only “ride the hole” as we call sitting on stand for long periods of time, but to enjoy the experience as well. Imagine that! You don’t have to be miserably cold while waiting on the deer. The COHO black fleece vest from Volt provides 3 zones of heat (2 on the chest and one larger zone on the back) from a 7.4v 2500mAh battery. The vest is noticeably lighter than previous brands we’ve tried with what Volt calls it’s “Zero Layer” heat system to eliminate bulk. We admit that the price tag for these vests do seem a little steep but they fall into that “seeing is believing” category of products. The vest comes with a battery and charger.

Approximate Battery Run Time per Power Level
100% High – 2 hours
75% Med/High – 3.5 hours
50% Medium – 5 hours
25% Low – 8+ hours

Carbo-Mask: Carbon based Face paint: $6.99

DSC_0072 (1)

We are fans of wearing face paint while bowhunting. We are not however fans of rolling up to the Dunkin Donuts looking like an extra from the movie Predator and frightening the girl behind the window. For us, face paint has to go on easy and come off easy. Carbomask fits the bill in these two areas for us while adding an extra element of odor absorption.

IMG_6505 (2)

Carbomask is a clay based paint made from activated charcoal to absorb any odors coming off of your face. It dries very quickly to your skin and doesn’t have the glare that other face paints on the market have. We tried the color black in a 1.5 ounce single tube and found that it was plenty of paint to last the season. The design of the tube is useful as well and comes with a small amount of paracord to latch to your pack or hang in your truck. The price point of this paint is right in line with other paints on the market and will last beyond one season.

Milwaukee 3-in-1 Heated Jacket: $299

DSC_0091

Another product falling into the “seeing is believing” category of price and function is the 3-in-1 camouflage jacket from Milwaukee tools. We have tried out Milwaukee’s heated products in the past and there were zero issues with the products performing as advertised. This latest addition to their heated line allows for the use of a heated vest worn by itself, the camouflage hooded jacket worn by itself, or both the vest and jacket worn in combination.
Battery & Charger: The M12™ REDLITHIUM™ Battery is the same one used on many of Milwaukee’s cordless tools and is interchangeable with the vest/jacket combo. This allows for you to use multiple batteries, giving you the option to always have one on the charger when the cold weather hits.

Vest: The vest contains carbon heating elements and an adapter plug for the battery. The quality construction and thermal fleece lining of this vest struck us a little by surprise. You are truly getting three quality combinations in these two well-made garments. 5 pockets are on the outside of the vest and there is even a USB port on the inside of the vest to charge other devices. A nice little feature to charge your phone with for those long days on stand or out on the ice fishing. The 5 heating zones (2 chest, 2 hand pockets, and 1 large back zone) are easily controlled from inside the upper chest region and are adjustable. You can turn on all 5 zones of heat or you can turn on chest and back only or hand pockets only to conserve battery life.

Hooded Realtree Xtra Jacket: This outer shell features removable hood, easy thru-access to heated vest pockets, and an area to attach your hunting tag. The jacket is made from a polyester / spandex softshell that is wind/water resistant and the cuffs are adjustable Velcro. The great thing about this jacket is that it is the type of jacket that looks like it should cost $300 by itself in one of the big box stores. The thermal waffle lining, 2 deep chest pockets and 2 lower side pockets show how far Milwaukee decided to go to keep us hunters happy with this new product. The zippered thru-pockets allow you to reach underneath while wearing the vest and slip your hands into the heated vest pockets. The hood is removable as well.
Overall, the 3-in-1 Realtree Xtra Heated Jacket from Milwaukee is the perfect product example of the the saying “Necessity is the mother of invention”. Hunters who need to stay on stand longer in cold weather conditions will find this 3-in-1 Jacket a necessity for your next hunting season!

Carhartt Insulated Camouflage bibs: $130

DSC_0100

Another new take on an old classic, the Realtree pattern cotton duck bibs by Carhartt might be the last pair of bibs you ever need to buy! These bibs are essentially the same style of bib as the tried and true classic duck bibs that Carhartt is famous for. They are tough as nails, quilt lined and are now available in Realtree to give you that extra edge in the deer woods. These bibs are surprisingly water-resistant as well and give you two buttons up the waist for ease of layering possibilities and fit. Another positive of the Carhartt name is that there is an array of size options including short, regular and big & tall. We put on some miles during our gun seasons and walk through some nasty terrain. The Carhartt Insulated Realtree bibs seemed to ask “Is that all you got?” each and every time through the brush. There are certain brands that have a reputation that cannot be questioned for quality and performance. Carhartt is certainly one of them. If you’re a fan of the classic style bib from Carhartt, do yourself and favor and grab a pair in Realtree for the woods next fall. You won’t be disappointed!

Huk Fishing and Spy Optics

IMG_6319

This summer, we were able to get out on the water and rip some lips. In doing so, we tested a few products that are designed specifically for avid anglers. More specifically, we tested two products from Huk Gear (the Black Camo performance ICON shirt and Performance Hoody) and two pair of sunglasses from Spy Optics (The “Rocky” and the appropriately named “Angler”). Although our fishing expertise is not as extensive as our Whitetail knowledge, we managed to bag several lunkers and have a great time out on the water. Here’s our thoughts on the above mentioned products:

Huk Gear
First of all, all of the apparel made by Huk Gear is decked out with the Huk logo and the branding locations on this apparel is uniquely cool. We just like how the stuff looks! Now lets’ get to how they fared in our outings on the water.

The ICON shirt:

huk long sleeve
This shirt is made from a loose fitting spandex type material with a mesh lower back portion. The fabric is antimicrobial and stain resistant. Not only was this shirt perfect to leave the camp during the slight chill of pre-dawn, it served a moisture wicking purpose in the heat of the day. It’s long sleeves keeps you protected from the sun while the mesh back provides a little air flow. We decided to test the antimicrobial aspect of this shirt by wearing it for 3 days straight during one of our fishing trips. My fishing buddies are happier than I to report that there was no noticeable stench!

The Performance Hoody:

huk hoodie
As anyone who has spent some time on the water knows, the wind out on the lake can change in a hurry. We were glad to have this Performance Hoody on two specific occasions this summer. Once when a storm rolled in and we got caught on the other end of the lake, and another time when the wind chill kicked up and the temperature dropped. The hoody kept us warm and even dry, despite the impromptu downpour. The hoody is also made with stain release, which comes in handy after hammering the Bass.

Huk Gear designs high performance apparel with UV protection for the hardcore fisherman. They already have an extensive line of items that is growing larger on a regular basis. Huk Gear keeps you protected from the elements and looking good in your search for that monster dream catch.

Check them out at www.hukgear.com

Spy Optics:
We’ve done several reviews of outdoor eyewear in the past and we really look for three things when we choose a good pair of sunglasses; 1. The fit of the frames has to match our face and stay put during our activities; 2. They’ve got to protect our eyes from the sun and be durable in doing so; and 3. They’ve got to look cool!!! Spy Optics is a respected brand and offers many styles that suit our outdoor lifestyle tastes. They even have some cool Realtree camo on the backside of the frames for some styles that allow you to express your love of the outdoors without being too “tacky”.

IMG_5342

The Rocky (Pictured above left): Not only does the Rocky look cool, the rubber nose pads help to make these one of the best fitting pair of sunglasses we’ve tried over the years. The blue spectra, polycarbonate lenses provide a very cool look as well as the polarization needed to see that lunker hiding beneath the dock. The frames also have small openings at the ends for clipping an included lease to ensure you won’t lose them when fighting the big boy or fumbling to grab the net for your buddy!

The Angler(Pictured above right): Side by side, the Angler has the same overall look and shape as the Rocky and fits our faces extremely well with no slippage. The Grilamid nylon frame of these Anglers are as durable as they come and the sharp looking Realtree trim on the backside of the frame is a sweet touch. The Angler also provides 100 % UV protection, comes with polarized lenses and has the same rubber nose pads and leash clips as the Rocky.
Happy, Happy, Happy: Both these models come with Spy Optic’s “Happy Lens”. Spy has figured out which wavelengths of light produce clearer vision and with wavelengths of light positively enhance your mood. The Happy Lens allows the Good Rays in and blocks out the Bad Rays. Both the Happy Lens Bronze and Blue Spectra lenses did a great job of increasing the contrast and color. As for our mood, it was hard to distinguish whether or not it was the lenses or the fact that we were out on a boat doing something we really enjoy that was causing our positive attitude. Either way, we’ll take the great fitting, Polarized, durable Rocky and Angler any day out on the lake!

XL Aluminum Folding Arch Ramp by Yutrax

XL Aluminum Folding Arch Ramp by Yutrax

DSC_0535

Over the years, we’ve used a variety of ramps to transport our ATV’s to and from our hunting grounds and ice fishing locations. We started with ramp kits and wooden planks but quickly learned that cracks, weathering and other variables led to possible mishaps during the loading / unloading process. The wooden planks were also a pain to transport in our short bed. We moved on to portable steel ramps that folded for easy transport but discovered that not all brands of ramps are created equal. Shotty welds, slippery surfaces and weak rivets led to more problems with the integrity of the ramps and unnecessary scratches on our vehicles. Our lesson in all of this was that being frugal does not translate well to ATV ramps! We decided to try out one of the best-selling models of ATV ramps on the market, the TX107 aluminum folding arch ramp by Yutrax.
The TX107 is built with fully-welded construction for optimum durability and is perfect for use on short bed trucks. After months of testing, here is our take on the TX107 ramps by Yutrax.

Specifications:
Dimensions:
•12″ x 89″ single ramp open
•12″ x 44.5″ single ramp folded
Construction: Welded aluminum
Capacity:
•750 lbs single ramp
•1500 lbs pair
Weight: 38 lbs as a pair

First Impressions:

The TX107 ramps are lightweight and made from fully welded aluminum. The side rails are beefier than most of the other ramps we’ve tried and the mesh surface allows for better gripping of our tires and peace of mind in snowy or wet weather. The rubber coated tabs are thicker than other ramps and there are three of them instead of two for better stability and protection on the tailgate.
How the ramps performed:

These ramps are light and can be moved around with ease.  They are also super strong and you won’t have to worry about your ATV or transport vehicle when using them.   We used these ramps in a variety of situations and conditions from ice fishing to muddy scouting trips and the ramps performed flawlessly each time.  There was no slipping, shifting or buckling while in use.  We simply cannot say enough good things about these ramps.

Overall Conclusion:

If you want to protect your ATV and vehicle while loading and unloading, you will want to check out these ramps.  There are cheaper ramps out there on the market but take it from us, you don’t want to risk using them.  Spend a few more bucks and go with the fully welded aluminum from Yutrax.  You’ll be glad you did!

The 11’ Wellington Crazy Horse Boot – Wood N’ Stream Outdoor Footwear

DSC_0509

The 11’ Wellington Crazy Horse Boot is one of the selections in the American Tradition line from Wood N’ Stream Outdoor Footwear. Wood N’ Stream is a Weinbrenner Company and they make many of their footwear products in the United States. As you may have read in any of our many reviews in the past several years, we’re huge supporters of these types of companies. They are doing their part to support American working families and therefore, our economy! The Wood N’ Stream division of Weinbrenner specializes in the outdoor footwear market and offers 16 lines of products that would appeal to any outdoor enthusiast. We really like the offerings in the American Tradition and American Heritage lines and will hopefully get the opportunity to showcase more of these products in the future.

First Impressions: The 11’ Wellington Crazy Horse is extremely well constructed from Goodyear Welt and are made from top quality materials. The insole is removable Dual-Density Polyurethane with a midsole of rubber and outsole of single-density polyurethane. The outside of the boot is protected with 3M™ Scotchgard™
Wear & Tear vs. Comfort: These boots can take a beating for sure but we were curious as to how long the comfort would last. Although we’ve only had these boots for a few months, the miles we’ve pot on them seem to indicate that the comfort level is holding strong. They still seem as comfortable for long periods of activity as when they were new, in fact more so now that they are “broken in”.
Overall Impressions: There are three aspects of the 11’ Wellington Crazy Horse boots that really impressed us. The boots are built extremely well, they are comfortable and seem to retain that comfort level after repeated use, and they are made in America! These aspects are more than enough to support the $150 price tag, which happens to be right in line, if not a bit cheaper, than other boots that are not as impressive. In fact, you can find these boots at your local

Bass Pro Shops

Wood N’ Stream has plenty to offer the work-hard / play-hard Sportsman. The boots are made with the best materials available and have a comfort level that lasts. Check out the Wood N’ Stream line-up by clicking the photo below!

2014 Deer Gear Review

2014 Deer Gear Review

It’s time for our annual Deer Gear Review where we give you a look at a few more options for the hardcore outdoorsman to consider as you head into the new year. We’ve spent the last five months field-testing these products and have tried to give you our honest opinion of them in this review. As always, you can find out more about a particular product or brand by clicking on the product photos below or by asking us directly in our forum. Enjoy!

Lo Pro Tonneau cover by Truxedo $480

If you spend a great deal of time in the outdoors, you probably own a truck. You probably toss your gear into the bed of that truck and that gear is too expensive or vital to expose to the elements. Enter the Lo Pro QT tonneau cover by Truxedo.  You’re probably aware of the gas savings you will achieve with a tonneau cover on your truck bed, but you may not be aware that all tonneau covers are not created equal.

We’ve reviewed 100’s of products over the years and there have only been a handful of times that a product has truly lived up to its billing and beyond.  The Lo Pro QT tonneau cover is one of those products. I’m sure this review will not even come close to doing it justice but I’m going to try. The Lo Pro QT cover comes in a long box with everything you need for installation except for the wrench. The materials are all top grade and everything fits perfectly on our Chevy Silverado because Truxedo took the time to find out what year our truck was. The free-floating Velcro side rails clamp onto the sides of the truck bed with the included aluminum clamps and there is no need to alter or drill any holes into your truck bed.  In fact, there is no indication that the rails were even clamped on to the truck upon removal.  Once the side rails are on, the cover slides onto the back of the truck bed and unrolls toward the tailgate for closure.  The cover is latched into place with a simple push of the back end and is easily unlatched with a flick of a lever.  The sides of the cover fall nicely into place with a quick brush of the hand over the Velcro and that’s all there is to it!

When we were looking for a tonneau cover, we wanted something that would easily fold up out of the way with an ATV in the truck bed without needing to uninstall every time. The cool thing about the Lo Pro QT is that it rolls up like a cheaper blanket cover but has the support of a stronger sectional cover when it is flat. You literally get the best of both worlds here!

Probably the best explanation of how impressive this cover is occurred when I was installing the cover on my truck. My neighbor happened to see me and inquired to see if I needed any help. I was at the point where I was sliding the back of the cover into the slots next to the window. Before he had reached my truck, I had the cover unrolled, latched and was gliding my hand over the Velcro sides. To say this dude was amazed was an understatement. After a 5 minute explanation of the brand, the features, the Truxedo website and his seemingly thorough inspection of the cover and my truck, he promptly told me he was going back to his house to inform his wife that he had found his Christmas present! This cover has had the same effect with each of our staff. Not only is this cover made from high grade materials, it’s a great piece of engineering.

Truxedo claims that the Lo Pro cover is the #1 selling tonneau cover on the market and I can certainly see why! This thing is easy to install, doesn’t damage your truck, works flawlessly, saves gas mileage and can stay on for use with ATV’s!

If you’re interested in the Lo Pro QT, don’t hesitate to contact Truxedo. They take the time to make sure you receive the right cover for your make / model and year of truck. With the Lo Pro QT tonneau cover from Truxedo, your gear won’t be exposed to the weather any more than it has to!

Heated Hoodies by Milwaukee ($99 – $200)

We’re huge fans of heated clothing because they allow you to stay on stand longer when the Mercury drops. Milwaukee has come out with a line of heated Jackets and hooded sweatshirts that uses durable carbon fiber heating zones on the chest and back area that run off of a 12 volt battery tucked in a concealed pouch along the back of the lower waist  We tested both the Red and Camo versions of this hoodie and were thrilled with the results.

Red Hoodie: $99 – $150 This is more like a traditional heavy hooded sweatshirt with a waffle weave polyester interior and a durable cotton exterior with ribbed cuffs and waistband. It resembles your favorite heavy-weight hoodie that you’ve worn for years except you can add extra heat in the core zones of your chest and back with the touch of a button located on the left chest. This Easy-touch controller allows for 3 heat settings (High, Medium and low) and is run off a 12 volt battery stored in a covered pouch on the inside of the back part of the hoodie. We were curious as to how Milwaukee would get around the concealment of a battery the size of small Red Bull can. The placement of the battery connection and pouch on the upper inside back waist portion of the hoodie does the trick in that we really couldn’t notice it being a hindrance, nor did it look weird when we wore it. The 12 volt battery will give up to 6 hours of continuous heat based on your heat setting (6 hours based on lowest heat setting) and the garment is completely machine washable and dryer safe (provided you take out the 12 volt battery).  The Hoodie Kit comes with a battery charger and we were quite surprised by how fast it will charge a battery. Another great touch on this heated sweatshirt is the ‘Milwaukee’ logo in electrocuted font.   It’s a classic logo and looks sweet across the chest!  This is the type of hoodie that we can wear around even without the battery connected because it’s such a classic style looking hoodie. It will look good at our kid’s soccer games and equally good at Deer Camp this season! This Hoodie also comes in Khaki and Gray.

Camo Hoodie: $120 – $200 The Realtree Max-1 version of this hoodie has the same waffle weave polyester interior but the cotton exterior seems a bit more waterproof than the red hoodie. This is a nice feature in that you can utilize this garment as your outer layer hunting jacket without feeling like you’re soaking up water in a rain shower. As far as we can tell, the beefier cotton exterior along with a slightly modified waist band (with drawstings) is the only difference between these two hoodies. Milwaukee clearly made the camo hoodie so that it can be worn as a rugged piece of outwear in the deer woods. Pairing this hoodie with a good set of base layers will definitely allow for more warmth with a great deal less bulk. The camo hoodie also comes in Realtree Xtra pattern.

Simply put, these two hoodies will become a staple in our hunting closet in the coming years.  Our advice would be to buy the red one for Deer Camp with a charger kit ($150) and purchase another in camo without the charger ($120) for the woods!  Batteries are around $40 and the chargers are around $50 but the good news is that these hoodies run off the same 12 volt battery packs that Milwaukee uses in its smaller cordless power tools.  If you already have one of those, you can buy the hoodie by itself and give it try this Deer Season.

Discord Sunglasses from Spy Optic with new “Happy Lenses” ($129.95)

We’ve tried many different brands and styles of Sunglasses over the last few years.  All of that testing has led us to 3 distinct things that we look for in a great pair of shades.

  • They need to stand up to the abuse we put them through, from hanging deer stands in the summer heat to protecting our eyes on a sunny frozen lake in the winter.
  • The glasses need to fit well and protect our eyes from physical hazards as well as the harmful rays of the sun.
  • They need to be stylish and not look like we just walked out of the lazer eye clinic.

Now many of the brands that we’ve tried in the past have met these 3 pieces of criteria but we recently stumbled on to a brand that gives us everything we’re looking for while at the same time allows us to express our outdoor lifestyle in the coolest of ways!  Enter Spy Optic with Realtree camo trim and the new “Happy Lens”.

Spy Optic allowed us to try the Discord model with their new “Happy Lens” this summer and not only do we love the style of these glasses, the Realtree camo trim on these bad boys makes these shades ultra-sharp looking! The Discord is made of a lightweight frame and durable metal hinges to stand up to our abuse.  The new 100% UV blocking “Happy Lenses” has taken a scientific approach to not only improving your vision, but also improving your mood.  The science behind the new “Happy Lens” is quite simple.  Sunlight is a combination of various wavelengths of light that can be separated into a variety of colors with a simple prism, remember your 6th grade science class?  Spy has figured out which wavelengths of light produce clearer vision and with wavelengths of light positively enhance your mood. The Happy Lens allows the Good Rays in and blocks out the Bad Rays. Click HERE To learn more about HAPPY LENS. I can honestly say that our mood was improved by wearing the Discord with Happy Lens but we couldn’t quite figure out if it was the science or the fact that these shades looked and felt so darn cool on our ugly mugs! Spy Optic has given us sunglasses that represent our love for Outdoors while still keeping us classy.

Spy Optic offers a huge variety of models, many of which that offer the Happy Lens and the Realtree camo trim.  Check them out at SPYOPTIC.COM

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

We tested the 55 quart Esky Cooler in both the All White and Khaki colors over the last few months.  The cooler performed extremely well in the following categories.

Cooling / Insulating performance: The Esky cooler will go toe to toe with any premium cooler that brags about “keeping ice longer”. As long as you secure the rubber latches on the cover, this cooler will keep ice in solid form for up to 5 – 7 days in “normal” conditions.
Rugged Exterior and hardware: The 55 Quart Esky is tough and will probably outlast you!  The latches and hardware are well constructed and will tolerate whatever level of abuse you can dish out.
Antibacterial Properties: The liner and cutting board are constructed out of Antibacterial additive that resists odor, mold and mildew.
Carrying / lugging around: The rope and rubber handles are rugged and allow for a sure grip and easy transport.
Draining: The dual drains allow for a variety of draining situations and you can use a hose thread if you can’t just let the cooler drain where it sits.
NFL Model: ESKY has an NFL team model for those die-hard fans out there!
Head Turner: You’ll get noticed the next time you carry this cooler into your next summer party. People flocked to the ESKY and started checking it out as if we had brought the Lombardi Trophy to the party. It was a great ice breaker…yeah, pun intended!

Cons: – but not really

Ease of latching: This is not really a negative since the latches are designed in such a way that makes them stay secure and hold the lid down with a tight seal. We did test these latches with several women and children and found that some had difficulty with supplying enough strength to open and close the latches. This however can certainly be viewed as a positive if you don’t want small children opening you cooler! With a small amount of practice, the latches actually become easy to use.  Again, this isn’t a knock on ESKY, just something we noticed in our testing.

Grub Boots – Stalking 5.0 APG $136.95

With the price of a good quality pair of waterproof boots approaching that of the latest Iphone these days, the decision on brand and style is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Enter Grubs Footwear!  Grubs Footwear is quickly attracting the attention of avid outdoorsman because of their array of light and moisture wicking insulation options, all in a 100% waterproof and flexible boot that is not going to breakdown with the wear and tear of your hunts.  There are several high-end waterproof boot options available on the market, but the level of traction and comfort had us convinced that Grubs is the new standard for our boot needs. Here’s a look at the Grubs Stalking 5.0 boot in APG Realtree camo.

The 5.0 stands for Grubs 5.0 TECHNOLOGY in which the boots are lined with moisture wicking terry knit, which keeps the wearer dry and has a super stretch to fit most calves. Grubs Footwear have various levels of thickness of insulation, lining and moisture wicking barriers ranging from their 3.5 technology boots all the way up to 12.0 technology boots.  The numbers are essentially the combined measurement of how thick the insulation, lining and barriers are in each boot.  The various levels of thickness for Grubs technology can be seen HERE.

The 5.0 technology of the boot we tested has a 5mm INSU-FOAM ULTRA liner which is a temperature neutral material that keeps feet comfortable in most conditions for a prolonged period. These boots are basically the “Go to” boot for most of the year’s hunting situations. They have enough insulation to keep you comfortable in the cold temps of the Whitetail woods, while wicking enough moisture for a run-and-gun Turkey hunt in the spring.  A great all-around boot that has the top spot as being the most comfortable boot we’ve worn in quite some time.

We wore these boots in a range of temperatures and conditions and we can truthfully say that our feet were never cold, always dry and consistently comfortable. The best way we can describe these boots is as if your most comfortable pair of sneakers was somehow turned into a waterproof, flexible boot! We’ve logged many miles while testing the Grub 5.0 Stalking boots and they are still as comfortable as the day we received them. They’ve held up to the brush and briars that we’ve subjected them too and are still 100% waterproof.

If all of the above is not enough to change your mind, here’s another attempt to prove how well we like these boots. Before testing these boots, we were die-hard LaCrosse footwear fans. Sure we’ve tested other boots before but always kept coming back to the tried and true rubber boot of LaCrosse. The same cannot be said after trying the Grubs 5.0 Stalking boot!  These boots give us more comfort, the same degree of waterproofing and the ability to wick moisture from our feet that rubber boots simply do not have. They also do not breakdown over time like the rubber boot variety  Grubs Footwear just added some new fans from the guys at Heritage Hunters.

Hawaiian Noni Energy Shot ($36 per 12 pack)

Hawaiian Noni Energy Shot is yet another “Energy Boost” found in a small container that gives the consumer a “Shot” of energy to help them with the daily grind. We were intrigued by this brand however because it claims to utilize the Hawaiian Noni fruit. Although the Noni fruit looks like a giant larvae-type mass, its health benefits are well documented and range from pain relief and reducing cholesterol to antibacterial properties and antioxidants for protection against forms of cancer. We decided to give the product a try and see if it would help us with the grind of our NY Deer Season. Here’ our take on the Hawaiian OLA Noni energy shot.

First Impressions: Tropical Fruity taste with some tanginess. This stuff tastes like what I would imagine blending about 10 tropical fruits together would taste like. It has that “full” taste to it in that it feels like you’re drinking a bunch of stuff in a small amount (if that makes any sense!)  There is no “flush” feeling or excitability after drinking the shot, although I need to mention that I am a coffee drinker so the 150mg of caffeine wouldn’t affect me anyway. Out of all the energy shots that I’ve tried over the years, the OLA noni energy shot is one that would be a quick ‘breakfast’ alternative on those days that you’re rushing. It tastes like a small fruity meal in a bottle!

Impact: As with most energy shots, there are many factors that come into play during the daily grind and the energy drains that accompany various situations.  Overall, we noticed no negative side-effects of using this product and we would characterize the energy gains as sustainable throughout our activity.  What you’re getting with this product is the energy boosting ability along with some medicinal benefits that can be incorporated into your daily diet.  In fact, think of Hawaiian OLA noni energy shots as a substitute for “juicing” without the need to clean out the blender!

Summary: Combine the tart and sweet taste of the Hawaiian OLA noni energy shot with the documented medicinal effects of the noni fruit and it’s hard to go wrong with this product.  There are plenty of negative viewpoints on energy drinks these days but the fact that this product is made with 75% blended juices is hard to criticize.

Hi-Tech Hoodie by Scent-Lok ($90 – $100)

The Hi-Tech hoodie from Scent-Lok combines scent elimination and performance fabric into a hooded sweatshirt.  Scent-Lok uses their Carbon Alloy technology to absorb odors.  The way it works is that it uses three types of substances (Activated Carbon, Treated Carbon and the mineral Zeolite) to absorb or “Trap” a large spectrum of odors.  These substances are integrated into the fabric to continually absorb odors.  When the substances are “Full” of odors, a simple re-activation of the garment is necessary by using a household dryer.  Of course all of this “Science” is tough to notice to the average hunter so you’ll basically have to take their word for it and re-activate as often as you see fit.  We stored these hoodies in a tote when we weren’t wearing them and re-activated them after 5 or 6 times in the field.

The moisture wicking fleece material of this hoodie is lighter than we expected but is not really a negative.  It’s more of a base layer for colder temperatures while being perfect for those early season hunts.  The exterior of the hoodie is treated to repel light moisture but then again, it’s not really heavy enough to be the outermost layer in November in New York.  We actually got used to the lighter weight of this hoodie and wore it just under our jackets.  We found this combination to be the best for our temperature ranges in early to late November.

The ¼ zip design was a big draw for us since we usually carry most of our upper layers lashed to our packs and finish dressing once we get to the stand.  The ¼ zip feature makes it easier to do this in the darkness of pre-dawn.

We would have preferred a drawstring at the bottom of the waist of these hoodies to keep our scent in a bit better as well as for a better fit.  This wasn’t an issue as much when we wore the hoodies as one of our base layers but it would have been nice for those early season hunts when we wore it as an outer layer.

We tested the Realtree Xtra pattern as well as the Black hoodie (perfect for ground blinds) and as is the case with all of Scent-Lok’s offerrings, they look sharp, especially the black with the orange stitching.

Overall these hoodies are extremely soft and comfortable to wear.  The stitching and hardware on these hoodies is top notch as is the durability.  If you want a heavier hoodie, Scent-Lok does offer a Carbon Fleece Pullover.  Otherwise, the Hi-Tech hoodie can be worn all season long in a variety of ways.

WINDSTOPPER® Soft-Shell Jacket and Pants by LL Bean ($179 -$209)

There’s never any question about the quality and durability of LL Bean products.  The Windstopper Soft Shell jacket and pants in Mossy Oak Break-up are no exception.  These garments will absolutely stand up to the grind of hunting season and keep you dry and comfortable in the elements.  The 3 layer Gore Windstopper fabric with microfleece lining gives you a waterproof barrier as well as a shield from the wind.  The lightweight polyester fabric is quiet and will stretch, giving you a greater range of movement without feeling constricted as you draw on that unsuspecting Whitetail.  The jacket and pants did a beautiful job during our bow season keeping us warm and dry.  The windstopper fabric works as advertised and you won’t have to worry about your base layers getting wet during a pop-up shower or a total downpour! The jacket is not as bulky as the typical outer layer and we were able to pack it in without it taking up as much space.  The breathable fabric of the pants was perfect for the long trek to the stand keeping us from getting overheated.  These garments are durable and of the highest quality.  One look out of the package will show that.

The pockets on both the jacket and pants are all strategically placed and we found them to be useful as well as quiet to open / close during a hunt. The sizing on the Jacket and Pants run a bit more form fitting than usual so we’d suggest ordering a size larger to accommodate layering under the soft-shell. With that stated, this combination of Windstopper Soft-shell Jacket and Pants will be your “Go-to” outer layer for most of the season at Deer Camp!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this version of the Deer Gear Review. As always, feel free to visit the links by clicking on the photos and learn more about the products.

Hardcore Hatchets by Hardcore Hammers

Anyone that spends a great deal of time in the Outdoors knows the value of a good hatchet.  Hardcore Hammers have pretty much perfected the Hatchet and made it into a make-shift hammer as well, combining two of the most commonly used camp tools into one.  We tried out both models offered by Hardcore Hammers (Hatchet and Minihawk) over the last month and we feel you’ll be hard pressed to find anything better for under $50!  Both the Hatchet and Minihawk are offered in Natural or Gunstock finish handles as well as curved or straight.  Each hatchet is handmade in the USA and that means that no two hatchets are alike.  These things can take abuse and have stood up to ours while laughing in our face!  They look cool and might possibly be the John Wayne of Hatchets!  Here’s a look at both models.

The Hardcore Hatchet: $45

The Hatchet (pictured above in the background) model looks more like the traditional head (19 oz.) on an 18″ American Hickory Handle. The back of the Hatchet head has a 6 sided blunt end that can be used for hammering.  One swing of this beast is enough to let you know that it’s a working man’s hatchet.  The fact that it looks badass is also a bonus! Several swings of this Hatchet gives you the feeling that it’s the only one you’ll ever buy.

The Hardcore Minihawk: $42

The Minihawk (pictured above in the foreground) harkens back to the movie “The Last of the Mohicans” with a narrower head (17 oz. 2.25″ blade) but still includes the chiseled hammer head on the back.  It too functions flawlessly and is our “go-to” piece of equipment for scouting and hanging stands.

The Sheaths:

Both the Hatchet and Minihawk has it’s own custom sheath (sold separately) and are both handmade by Saddle makers in Montana.  The Sheath is stamped with the Hardcore Hammer logo and fits each head perfectly!

Summary:

There are three undeniable facts about these hatchets: 1) They are extremely durable and will most likely outlast you! 2) They function incredibly well with a feel and balance that easily becomes a part of your hand, and 3) The price is far below what you’d expect to pay for such a beautifully crafted tool. They both double as hammers which make this tool even more useful around the house and camp.  Whether you’re at camp this summer, hanging stands, or just splitting some wood for the fire, you can be assured that the Hardcore Hatchet and Minihawk will hold up to the task and look damn good doing it!
